ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex Relaunches

On February 25, 2010 Walt Disney World Resort and ESPN joined forces to re-launch the 220-acre facility and rename it ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The aim is to take youth sports to the next level by creating an entertaining and immersive experience for the nearly 2 million athletes, coaches and spectators that pass through the doors each year. The leading multi-sport venue in the nation, will be incorporating signature elements of ESPN, where athletes, coaches and fans will be able to connect with their favorite ESPN programs, personalities and elements that will make them feel like they have reached the big leagues. Guests will discover a new welcome center, and a digital center where video is captured by 56 high definition robotic and handheld cameras located across the campus and then is edited for display on over 40 video screens and two “jumbotrons” that are located across the complex as a part of an actual Wide World of SportsCenter. The behind the scenes technical staff will work in the Innovation Lab, working on ground-breaking ESPN on-air products by using the action that is happening throughout the complex as a real-world testing ground.

Disney Sports hosts more than 250 events a year and has accommodated over 60 different sports with athletes from more than 70 countries. ESPN televises more than 20 sporting events from the complex every year, and the Atlanta Braves call Champion Stadium home, during their annual spring training season . Walt Disney World Resort and ESPN also work together annually on the very popular ESPN The Weekend event at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This year ESPN The Weekend will be taking place February 26-28.
